Every October, The Clayco Foundation hosts Illumination Chicago, our signature Halloween gala supporting rare disease research for RVCL, in memory of my late wife, Ellen.
Illumination began nine years ago with our son, Shawn Clark, whose vision turned grief into purpose. Inspired by Ellen’s radiant spirit, Shawn imagined a party with a purpose, a celebration that would cast light on rare diseases and raise vital funding for research. What started as a heartfelt family effort has grown into one of Chicago’s most inspiring philanthropic traditions.

Drawing from Ellen’s compassion and Shawn’s creative spirit, Illumination was designed as an artful experience of light, hope, and community. From its early roots inspired by Chicago’s Redmoon Theater and the Halloween event Boneshaker, Shawn sought to honor Ellen through a night that celebrated life, connection, and purpose.
This weekend, hundreds of guests came together again at Moonlight Studios to celebrate Illumination’s ninth year, proving that compassion, creativity, and community remain powerful forces for change.

Together, we’ve raised over $1.2 million, with additional donations continuing to come in from our silent auction and from those moved to give at RVCL.org (http://rvcl.org/). Since its inception in 2016, Illumination has helped fuel critical RVCL research, educating and supporting patients, researchers, and physicians.
Our family’s commitment remains strong. We are determined to find a cure, and your continued generosity ensures Ellen’s legacy—and Shawn’s vision—continue to shine brightly.
