February’s Inspiration of the Month: Mariane Ibrahim’s New Gallery in Mexico City

As I continue to develop Bob Clark Beyond into a platform of connectivity and creativity, I’ll start highlighting an inspiration of the month – dedicated to a person or place that is worth knowing more about. There’s no better person to start with than my friend and gallerist, Mariane Ibrahim, who has just opened her third gallery in Mexico City. Ibrahim was born to Somali parents in New Caledonia but grew up largely in France, and studied advertising before she entered into the art world.

Paul R. Williams: A Black Architectural Pioneer

The movement toward building a racially equitable society that values the power of diversity shouldn’t ever be limited to just one month of the year, and most certainly not the shortest one. Every February, we celebrate Black History Month to highlight the endless contributions Black Americans have made to American society – and the adversity still faced at the hand of it. This month I will take the opportunity to amplify a few black voices and innovators that have inspired me and countless others to put our best foot forward within our communities, passions, and ourselves.

January’s Architect of the Month: HDR

A design-firm specialized in architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services whose work I have admired for many years is HDR Inc. The company’s history spans more than 100 years. Henningson Engineering Company was founded in 1917 in Omaha, Nebraska, by H.H. Henningson, a visionary who cared about rural communities. It was his commitment to people that drove the firm’s incredible growth.

Inaugural Pernod Ricard Distillery

Our teams at Clayco and Lamar Johnson Collaborative have something to toast about! We are working as the design-build crew for the first Pernod Ricard green field distillery in the United States. We will develop its 150,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral distillery and aging warehouses in Marion County, Kentucky. The 265-acre project is part of Pernod Ricard's growing Jefferson's Bourbon brand and will produce over 7.5 million proof gallons of bourbon annually. To keep community ties close, Jefferson will partner with local farmers and suppliers to source ingredients and casks whenever possible. The structure will also include a world-class visitor center to welcome bourbon enthusiasts on the historic Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Dominion Energy’s Thomas F. Farrell Building

Clayco and Hourigan Construction collaborated to provide design-build services for Dominion Energy’s new office tower in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Like Clayco, Hourigan aims to enhance communities through its integrated services and we are continuing this vision with this transformative 20-story project. The 1 million-square-foot development spans a full city block and includes a high-performance workplace for over 1,000 employees, street-level retail, employee amenities, and parking. To maintain environmental goals, the building is certified LEED Gold and implements various sustainability strategies like energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, an exterior landscaped terrace that captures and utilizes rainwater, and more. This is especially significant for Dominion Energy as the company is committed to safely providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Myrlande Constant’s Paintings with Beads

Myrlande Constant is a Haitian textile artist born in 1968 specializing in Vodou-themed flags. Constant was born in Port-au-Prince, where she learned the art of beading while working with her mother in a wedding dress factory. After quitting that job because her employers wouldn’t pay her, she took a severance pay of knowledge and bags filled with beads – and went on to become one of the most celebrated artists for making Drapo Vodou. Constant started making Vodou flags in the 1990s in an entirely male environment and ultimately became the first woman in Haiti to apply the tambour technique in her work. She radically shifted her nation’s traditional religious art by using glass beads instead of sequins. Constant also prefers constructing large-scale tableaus, describing her work as "painting with beads."

Crain’s Chicago Business Who’s Who

The Crain's Chicago Business Who's Who list is back after five years! The team at Crain’s does a great job of developing a list of more than 300 names that you should know in Chicago.

Vivid Seats Chicago HQ Designed by LJC

Vivid Seats has a new headquarters in Chicago! The 40,600-square-foot corporate HQ for the leading online ticket marketplace was designed by Clayco’s partner company Lamar Johnson Collaborative. The facility enables a hybrid work model with collaborative workspaces and an area for live events, a gym, coffee shop, bar, rooftop, and a food court in the historic Marshall Field Building downtown. All excellent reasons for people to get back to the office! Like how our work in design and building connects people through the development of spaces, Vivid Seats operates on the belief that “Life Happens Live” and unites people through one of the widest selections of events and tickets in North America. This facility helped the company construct a new identity, celebrate the brand, and prove to its team that there is no replacement for the creativity, cooperation, and innovation that comes from working together in person.

Delmar DivINe Bridges Community Gaps

Throughout history, art has always played key roles as an escape, challenge, or medium to allow people to process their emotions and creatively navigate change. The power of art and its ability to foster human connection is evident in every community, including my hometown of St. Louis. Delmar DivINe serves as a centerpiece for advancement and allows St. Louis to turn the tide of history and reimagine life for its residents and the entire country. It is a once-in-a-generation project that aims to help bridge the racial divide by providing a place where people from all walks of life can gather, connect, and make lasting memories. The building is a catalyst for change and houses nonprofit organizations, sponsors innovative programs, and provides affordable housing for young professionals and social leaders.

I Can See Clearly Now

Whenever people start a conversation about which of the five senses is their favorite, I’m baffled because there's only one that really matters to me. My sight. I'm not a foodie and could go without eating if there was a pill to replace food. I do like hearing, but there are a lot of annoying things that come with that. Smelling is 50-50 to me, and I will admit that parts of touch are important. But nothing comes close to seeing.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr

The third Monday every January commemorates the life and work of the American civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. Although workers across our nation generally have the day off, the best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy is to consider the holiday a “day on” with community involvement instead. Clayco’s Black Resource Group (BRG) and marketing team created this flyer to showcase events that people can attend virtually or in person in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, including a day of reflection and service, volunteering, community celebrations, and more. BRG’s mission is to help provide a path toward equal opportunity and ensure that Black employees feel safe and welcome in their workspace. I strongly encourage you to attend any of the events listed to join us in creating more inclusive and equitable communities.

National Design/Build Services

National Design Build Services (NDBS) was founded in 2007 in my home state of Missouri and has since become a leader in the HVAC Mechanical Services industry. Clayco highly values companies that share our values of community commitment and best-in-class products and deliveries – which is why NBDS has served as a subcontractor on more than 40 of our projects! NDBS has worked with us on SCAD developments, Blue Engine Plant Expansion, Gestamp Production Facility, Jet Aviation, Volkswagen, and, most recently, the McCormick Distribution Center in Baltimore. The company focuses on energy efficiency and develops the best possible solutions for each project, which is one of the reasons our Clayco team collaborates so well with theirs as we work to transform the environments around us. NBDS designs are environmentally conscious and also limit the cost impact to building owners for the life-cycle of the facility.

Fort Wayne International Airport's (FWA) Terminal Expansion

Our Clayco team was awarded the Fort Wayne International Airport's (FWA) East Terminal Expansion project in Indiana! Construction on the 35,500-square-foot renovation and expansion will begin in May 2023 as part of the airport's Project Gateway. It will ultimately enhance the terminal building to support continued growth and create an appealing and efficient passage to the local community.

SK Battery America

Clayco is delivering excellence on SK Battery America’s first electric vehicle battery factory in America! The 2.4 million-square-foot facility in Commerce, Georgia, represents one of the largest single investments in a job-creating initiative in the state’s history, and the largest in over a decade. The SK Battery America site will employ over 2,000 people by 2025, with a production capacity reaching 9.8 GWh by 2022 – an incredible benefit to the state economy and surrounding community. SK is one of the biggest global producers of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and fully-electric automobiles and vehicle manufacturers, including Volkswagen in Chattanooga. This new development will accommodate the increasing demand for “greener” vehicle solutions by producing an effective supply chain of elements needed for electric cars that can combat climate change for individuals and businesses alike.

Clayco 2022: A Day in the Life

I always enjoy Clayco’s “Day in the Life” annual tradition, where we share the incredible people, projects, and experiences our team has had over the past year. This much-anticipated photo book is the result of snapshots sent to us from our 2,800+ Clayco team members across North America and beyond. The renderings, sketches, webcam images, and photos connect us through the impactful stories and work we share.

Lululemon

Although Clayco and Lululemon are very different in terms of the services we offer (us in design/build and the other a technical athletic apparel company for yoga, running, training, and most other sweaty pursuits), in a sense, we are both types of “builders” – one of structures and the other of good health! While Clayco took on the organization’s 175,000-square-foot warehouse expansion for product storage and secondary office space with additional breakrooms, offices, conference rooms, and employee amenities, Lululemon is helping people build their health and wellness. With a covered outdoor basketball court and outdoor patio spaces with canopies, our renovations may help others discover their love for fitness and the outdoors too!

Penn Medicine's RVCL Research Center

The Clayco Foundation is committed to supporting meaningful research to find treatments and a cure for Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy (RVCL), a rare genetic disease. We have made great strides and progress over this past year. Illumination 2022 was an incredible record-breaking gala for The Clayco Foundation in October, where we raised $1.1 million to help support the search for a cure for RVCL and to help pave the way for cures for all genetic orphan diseases.

2022 Reading List

I always enjoy using my downtime or travel time to immerse myself in a good book. It’s important for me to stay current with ongoing affairs, whether that’s related to politics, business, or interesting historical stories. Take a look at my 2022 reading list here:

Artists Find Home in Chicago’s Innovative Art World

Some of my great friends and favorite artists are featured in an article by Harper’s Bazaar about Chicago’s transformative art scene. Chicago is widely known as a “laboratory for architectural innovation and experimentation” for its architecture and art. Living in the city, it’s clear that its unparalleled designs translate to various unique projects, artwork, and influences. Harper’s Bazaar takes us into the creative minds of Chicago’s artists, gallerists, curators, community builders, and beyond. The feature analyzes how Chicago became an art-world capital without falling victim to cliches. Many of the incredible people mentioned are my personal friends or colleagues from whom I have procured artwork for the Clark Collection. Working in construction, I highly value the “Art and Science of Building,” and our team collaborates with local artists to incorporate community values in every development and form deeper connections between residents and the spaces we create for them to enjoy.

Grand Opening of Delmar DivINe

Great things are happening in my hometown of St. Louis! Clayco hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of Delmar DivINe. The 310,000-square-foot building is now home to 150 apartments, space for 33 nonprofit tenants, and retail storefronts along Delmar Boulevard. The development is devoted to social change and cultural legacy and aims to strengthen the nonprofit sector in the St. Louis region among health, education, and human service organizations. The “IN” in Delmar DivINe stands for INvestment, INnovation, and INclusion which are top priorities for our team at Clayco and the incredible organizations that use this transformative space. I believe in St. Louis and care deeply about it reaching its full potential, and not just for those who already have privilege and opportunity. St. Louis is a city that can enable everyone to prosper, and projects like this help turn this vision into a reality.

December Architect of the Month: Krueck Sexton Partners

The Architecture and Planning firm, Krueck Sexton Partners, is the featured December architect of the month on Bob Clark Beyond, and for a good reason. Since founding the company, Ron Krueck and Mark Sexton have made it their mission to contribute to Chicago’s architectural legacy. They make their mark on the city through transformative structures and by inspiring the next generation of young architects to learn and contribute to innovative discoveries. The company’s first project in 1981, A Steel and Glass House, was the first sign of how it operates with a different people-centric mindset. The firm works to uncover a project's potential by creating value and impact for the client and beyond.

Clayco supports Architectural Engineering Scholarship Program at Penn State

Clayco is supporting the next round of students in the Architectural Engineering Scholarship program at Pennsylvania State University. Sending warm congratulations to the outstanding Clayco Design-Build scholarship recipients – Raida Abdoellah, Nicholas Griffin, Joe Ricci, and Sophie Zheng!

St. Charles Riverpointe

If there is one strength that our team at Clayco has, it is knowing how to transform and optimize spaces for communities. Clayco and CRG have started construction on the first phases of Riverpointe, a $350 million development in St. Charles, Missouri that has been more than a decade in the making. The project aims to reverse 200 years of overlooking the incredible potential the local riverfront has. Over the next five years, our teams will restore 120 acres along the Missouri River to build on the success of the neighboring 27-acre mixed-use development. With a 30-acre riverside lake, the new waterfront will stretch between the Ameristar Casino and the Family Arena and be lined with office buildings, 500 apartments, 150 hotel units, 100,000 square feet of riverfront restaurants and retail, and more.

The Clayco Foundation continues to reinforce the Art and Science of Building through our support of the Opera Theatre of St. Louis Fellowship program and its third class of Future Leaders! Congratulations to Linda Holyoke (advancement fellow), Jhané Perdue (artistic fellow), and Jenna Pieper (administrative fellow) for being named the 2022 to 2023 recipients. Pieper and Holyoke are also the first Fellows to join the program from my hometown of St. Louis.

Reinsurance Group of America HQ Established in MO

Clayco served as the design-builder for the Reinsurance Group of America’s (RGA) $150 million headquarters in my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri! Gensler and Fox Architects also worked on the project as the building design consultant and interior architect to help bring the 415,000-square-foot interactive and connective workplace to life. The design of the corporate campus mirrors RGA’s global brand and the local roots of its people, featuring two high-tech, five-story glass office towers connected through a stone-clad base that conceals the parking structure.

Minnesota’s bid for the 2027 Expo

The World’s Fairs have an incredible history and have given us some of the world’s most remarkable inventions, including the telephone, live television, and clean energy cars. The first modern World’s Expo was Britain’s Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Remembered as the Crystal Palace Exhibition for Joseph Paxton’s magnificent iron and glass structure, it was an enormous success. Since then, World’s Fairs have focused on innovation, technology, and cultural exchange, with themes offering a glimpse into utopian futures. The World’s Expos gave rise to a number of widely-recognized global landmarks like Seattle’s Space Needle, the Biosphere in Montreal, and of course, Paris’s Eiffel Tower. Constructed as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, the wrought iron tower – built from 18,000 pieces of metal and named after engineer Gustave Eiffel – was a technological masterpiece of construction. It has since come to symbolize France and is one of the most iconic structures in the world.

AppHarvest Expands Across Kentucky

The Appalachian sustainable food company, AppHarvest, opened its two latest indoor agriculture facilities in Kentucky! AppHarvest develops and operates some of the world’s largest high-tech indoor farms. Clayco's Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) team is focused on helping solve the company’s challenges to “fight the food fight for a resilient food system.” AppHarvest has locations throughout Kentucky in Berea, Richmond, and Somerset, aiming to operate 12 high-tech indoor farms by the end of 2025. At the Berea 15-acre leafy green farm, Richmond 60-acre CEA farm, and 30-acre Somerset CEA farm, Clayco has acted as lead program manager to greenhouses, headhouses, utility plants, and site work while providing design, engineering, and construction services for the office portion of the projects.

Theaster Gates Debuts First American Exhibition Survey

As an admirer of art and social justice, it’s great to see my friend and revolutionary artist, Theaster Gates, reaching new heights in his career. Gates debuted his first major American museum survey at the New Museum in NYC that commemorates the people who shaped his worldview. “Young Lords and Their Traces” is an exhibition honoring the radical thinkers in Gates’ life, his hometown of Chicago, and the U.S. as a whole. He is a visual artist, urban planner, and self-described “artist, bureaucrat, and hustler.” Gates creates multimedia projects, installations, and performance art that confront issues of social justice, racial inequality, and poverty across America.

University City Costco has Fantastic Response after Opening

The newest Costco in University City, Missouri, has had a fantastic response since its recent opening! The facility anchors the larger Market at Olive redevelopment at Interstate 170 Olive Boulevard that Clayco is constructing with Larry Chapman, CEO of Seneca Commercial Real Estate. The aim is to transform the area into a commercial hotspot with almost 50 acres of retail space, restaurants, apartments, offices, a hotel, and more. Costco was the first retailer to open in the U City structure, which will add increasing value to the region as more businesses prepare for their grand opening.

The Art & Science of Building Wildhorse Village

Wildhorse Village is coming alive! This multi-use development in Chesterfield, Missouri, will serve as a brand-new urban center and feature incredible amenities and even signature artwork. This project perfectly demonstrates how our team at Clayco works to embody the art and science of building. The village combines innovative design and luxuries to give residents and visitors a unique and positive experience. It will not only offer 1 million square feet of office space, 150 for-sale residences, 500 apartments, and 100,000 square feet of retail space that spans 80 acres of land, but also inspirational artwork.

Whirlwind Trip to Visit Colleagues in Asia

It has been an incredible experience visiting Asia over the past two weeks. My trip began with a visit to South Korea, where I spent some time in beautiful Seoul. I then headed to Busan to check out the bid site for the 2030 World Expo! I took a bullet train there to see where the exposition would be, and it would make for a perfect location. The city has 3.5 million residents and is located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula with beaches, mountains, rivers, seas, and hot springs. Sin Chae-Hyun, Ambassador for International Relations, World Expo 2030, led a great presentation of the site for the Korean bid. I enjoyed my time traveling around the country and immersing myself in the local culture. I had the chance to visit Samsung and the SK Ecoengineering Team and have some great conversations with colleagues about the innovative practices in South Korean business models.

In Memory of George Paz

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of my good friend, George Paz, former Express Scripts chairman and CEO, who passed away yesterday. In business I often say, “all I want is what I want when I want it.” George Paz was even more demanding than that. He wanted it, he wanted it to be perfect, he wanted it right now, and he wanted to know as much about the details as anyone. He was demanding, smart, no nonsense, and incredibly passionate.

In the construction industry alone, Latino Americans make up over a third of the workers and are projected to account for 78% of net new workers between 2020 and 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

LJC Creates First Bank HQ

Lamar Johnson Collaborative is collaborating with First Bank to build its 85,000-square-foot innovative headquarters in Creve Coeur, Missouri. The facility reimagines the workplace and is being constructed for the well-being and forward-thinking future of the company’s workforce and clients. LJC’s team is designing the building to reflect the workplace changes that followed the pandemic and encourage employees to socialize, host meetings, and collaborate on projects. The structure will feature a courtyard-style office that offers flexibility between landscapes and provides natural light for each desk, with quality space and great views for each team member. First Bank’s goal is to develop a building that will last for generations and is a landmark in Creve Coeur and beyond.

CRG Grows Acquisitions and Development Team

CRG added the new team members after the firm was acquired by Prologis, the world’s largest industrial landlord, for $23 billion. CRG is already filled with strategic and ambitious individuals, which is how they quickly identified the value in this acquisition and chose a top-tier team that shares the same values. Welcome to the CRG team – Mark Crawford, Joe Hawkins, and Isaac Lau! Crawford joins CRG as chief investment officer, Hawkins will serve as a senior vice president of portfolio management, and Lau’s new role will be vice president of acquisitions in the western region. This collaboration aims to build on CRG’s success in developing over $1 billion of new industrial projects annually.

POPCourts! Project Transforms Chicago West Side

Lamar Johnson Collaborative created the transformative POPCourts! project on Chicago’s West Side. The 7,000-square-foot development is versatile and works as both basketball courts and an outdoor community plaza in the Austin Neighborhood. The project was developed in collaboration with Mayor Lightfoot’s INVEST South/West initiative, which brings together groups to invest in neighborhoods and drive inclusive growth throughout the city. The space hosts food trucks, farmers’ markets, and impactful murals by local artists that feature influential leaders like Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, and Maya Angelou.

Kids Dig Sparks Interest in World of Building

Clayco hosted our first-ever Kids Dig in Chicago! This incredible event offered the patients of Lurie Children's Hospital and their families the opportunity to explore construction in a fun and interactive way! Over 100 kids joined throughout the day at one of Clayco’s active job sites, 170 N. Green St. in Fulton Market, and had the chance to work with rollers, bulldozers, excavators, and telehandlers in a giant sandbox – all with supervised assistance of course (because safety is Clayco’s #1 priority). Aside from being able to sit on and operate the machinery, the children were also able to learn more about construction and what is done each day on a job site. This unique fundraiser promotes wellness for the children while sparking their imagination and interest in the world of building.

Developing Careers and Communities through CCDI

Clayco always does outstanding work through our Construction Career Development Initiative (CCDI). CCDI positively impacts local communities in St. Louis, Chicago, and beyond by bringing diversity to the design and construction industry. The building was completed in under six months despite delays with municipality processes and weather issues – which is a testament to our strong partnerships with determined developers.

Book Review: URGING endless United States support to see Ukraine purge Putin from the West

The Splendid and the Vile Book Review There are few things more terrifying than watching history repeat itself – especially when that history is rooted in death, war, and xenophobia. After reading “The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz” by #1 New York Times bestselling author Erik Larson, I couldn’t help but make connections between the conflicts and turmoil experienced across Europe in the past and how it is happening before our eyes again today.

The UChicago Obama Scholars will supplement their studies with innovative co-curricular programming, engaging with partners on Chicago’s South Side, and using their experiences to advance social change.

The property will be fully furnished and have catered spaces for students to study, play, and live – all with a beautiful view of the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountain range. The CRG Residential team scouted this project at the end of September 2020 and secured the opportunity within just 90 days of the first phone call. This is a testament to the hard work and diligence of our Clayco and CRG teams and the great subcontractors and collaborators who help make our developments top tier.

August’s Artist of the Month: Marcellina Akpojotor

A young artist whose work I admire immensely is Marcellina Akpojotor. She is from Nigeria and her art explores female empowerment and the roles of women in African society. She says she was drawn to art from an early age and spent a lot of her childhood observing her father, a sign maker in Lagos. After school, she would watch him working in his studio, learning calligraphy, painting, stenciling and drawing.

Supporting Women in Construction and Beyond

At Clayco, our culture is focused on going beyond our walls to invest in the individuals on our team and the communities we impact. The White House announced Women’s Equality Day on August 26th, which was the perfect time to recognize the incredible women that make up our societies and deserve equity, respect, and inclusion. To commemorate this day, I had the amazing opportunity to discuss topics that focused on women and opportunities at Clayco with Clayco NOW (Network of Women) in a Moderated Panel Discussion with over 320 people. There were a lot of great takeaways from the panel, such as the importance of staying committed to goals and achieving them through effective plans. Netta Jenkins, a Global Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, was also a featured guest speaker and shared her experience and knowledge on the importance of DEI initiatives and innovation. Our panel speakers also spoke about the importance of having a voice, asking for what you want, and supporting others along the way.

Clayco Takes on SCAD Indian Street Project

Clayco is taking on a 250,000-square-foot residence hall project in Savannah, Georgia! The site is close to several of Savannah College of Art and Design’s (SCAD) facilities which have a large student population with no nearby housing. Because of the location and lack of available living space, this project presents a unique opportunity to provide more housing for students and create a statement building that will be visible from the downtown area.

Delmar DivINe Reaches New Milestone

I am proud to announce that Clayco has reached a significant milestone on our Delmar Divine project in my hometown of St. Louis. We have been converting the Old 1904 St. Luke’s Hospital Campus into a mixed-use building with 150 apartments, 30 nonprofit tenants, and retail businesses. Our inspection by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was completed last week and the owner started moving in their first phase of residents over the weekend! This project is the epicenter for innovating an entire community that has long been neglected. Even with several obstacles, Clayco managed the project for 563 days without a recordable injury on the commercial project and 215 days on the residential project — that is pretty amazing! Our top priority as a company is to make sure that our team is operating safely, which is why every day is safety day at Clayco and our year-round commitment to the Safe + Sound Campaign is an important recognition of our values and testament to that. We continuously work to have a safety and health program in place with management leadership, worker participation, and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards.

A Riveting Read – “Boundless: The Rise, Fall, and Escape of Carlos Ghosn”

I recently read the fantastic book “Boundless: The Rise, Fall, and Escape of Carlos Ghosn,” by two Wall Street Journal reporters Nick Kostov and Sean McLain. It was a riveting read about the success and alleged crimes of business executive Carlos Ghosn who made his career at Michelin in Brazil, Renault in France, and Nissan in Japan. You will have a hard time putting this book about the CEO-turned-fugitive down – it’s entertaining, fun, and to the point! Ghosn had many global ties and a unique experience as he was born in the Amazon, raised in Beirut, and educated in Paris. He gained prominence through executive positions in multinational companies, earning nicknames like the Le Cost Killer for his business savvy skills and Mr. 7-Eleven for his tireless dedication to his work. People admired Ghosn and believed him to be the leading innovator of his generation. However, once the fame and glory went to his head, he became greedier and began down the path to disgrace.

ABCO Electrical Construction & Design, LLC

It was great to collaborate with ABCO Electrical Construction & Design LLC as a subcontractor for Clayco. The company has serviced the Chicagoland area for more than 15 years and provides full-service electrical contracting from design and engineering to the complete installation of electrical systems. They specialize in various residential, commercial, and industrial projects and partnered with Clayco on our Central Steel & Wire and The Cubes at Country Club Hills projects. Central Steel & Wire is an 894,300-square-foot industrial warehouse and distribution center in University Park, Illinois. It includes 38,000 square feet of total office space and the warehouse consists of 100 ft x 30 ft internal column bases and twenty 20-ton bridge cranes. Clayco worked as the design-builder for the center and has constructed over a half-dozen facilities in the University Park area overall.

Caleres Headquarters

Clayco, CRG, and Lamar Johnson Collaborative are working to transform the Clayton campus of footwear retailer Caleres Inc. into a $500 million mixed-use redevelopment! Caleres, formerly known as Brown Shoe Co., has roots in St. Louis dating back to the 1870s and has been in Clayton since the 1950s. The 9-acre site includes plans to construct an office building, boutique hotel, luxury condominiums, townhouses, and an athletic resort concept.

Blue Origin Embarks on 6th Space Tourism Mission

Blue Origin successfully completed its sixth human spaceflight and the 22nd flight for the New Shepard program. The astronaut crew included: Coby Cotton, Mário Ferreira, Vanessa O'Brien, Clint Kelly III, Sara Sabry, and Steve Young. It was exciting to see it LIVE!

Clayco Named A Category Standout

I am so proud that Clayco was named to Fast Company’s 2022 Best Workplaces for Innovators United States list! Fast Company, a world-leading business media brand that focuses on transformative technology, ethical economics, leadership, and more, recognized Clayco as one of nine category standouts for our creative infrastructures and breakthroughs. We are honored to be ranked again among so many incredible pioneering companies across industries. Innovation is what has enabled Clayco to grow from humble origins and has always been the center of our company’s foundation.

August’s Architect of the Month: Eero Saarinen

An architect with ties to St. Louis whose work I have always admired is Finnish-American Eero Saarinen, who was known as a leader of the second-generation modernists. In 1947, he designed the magisterial Gateway Arch, built to commemorate the westward expansion of the US. A futuristic symbol, it rises above the cityscape of St. Louis and is a great example of how Eero constantly pushed aesthetic boundaries. He was born in Kirkkonummi, Finland in 1910, to world-famous parents. His father was the architect Eliel Saarinen and his mother, Loja Gesellius, was a textile designer and sculptor. The family moved to the US in 1923, where they settled first in Evanston, Illinois, and then in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Cattle Kingdom: The Hidden History of the Cowboy West

I recently read Christopher Knowlton’s book “Cattle Kingdom: The Hidden History of the Cowboy West” and it gave great insight into the open range cattle era and how it changed America forever. The US has consistently proven that it can withstand repeated boom-and-bust eras within our civilization. From the Great Depression to the housing bubble of the early 2000s, to an unprecedented global pandemic and everything in between, perseverance and adaptation are key parts of who we are as a nation. After the Civil War ended, the cattle age brought about the greatest boom-and-bust cycle until the Great Depression, the invention of the assembly line, and the beginning of the conservation movement. Knowlton gives a new view of the Old West and how its movements and cowboys achieved incredible goals, rose, fell, and left a lasting impact on society.

Xalt Energy (Dow Kokam) Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing Facility

I am always excited to see how Clayco’s use of transformational design-build technology helps our construction projects come together so efficiently. Our construction innovation paired with technology and automotive innovation produced a 400,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art battery manufacturing facility for XALT Energy (Dow Kokam). This futuristic plant produces affordable lithium-ion batteries and consistent energy solutions for customers in the expanding electric vehicle market. The single-story manufacturing plant includes 45-foot clear heights and clean-dry rooms for manufacturing processes as well as 600 million additional watt-hours and incorporated battery pack assembly equipment and production. It was also built with insulated tilt-up concrete wall systems and features glass exterior design elements.

July’s Artist of the Month: Clotilde Jiménez

A visual artist I admire is Afro-Latino, Honolulu-born, Clotilde Jiménez, who grew up in North Philadelphia. He was raised in a tough neighborhood, but thanks to his mother, he used his artistic talent to move out of the city and enroll in college. Clotilde received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio in 2013 in printmaking. He completed an MFA in painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 2018.

I started Clayco in 1984 when I was 25 years old. I had tried a couple of other vocations that I hated. I had always dreamed of being an architect and builder and loved constructing things. I also really cared about the community and people in general and thought there could be an intersection of both. I was ambitious and had big plans, but with no real idea about how I was going to actually accomplish them. I didn’t have many resources, any education, or experience. What I lacked in those things I gained with common sense, being kind, creativity, and unbelievable passion. Proving you can compete with one and without the other. There were many lessons along the way.

Aspen Security Forum

Keeping up-to-date and informed regarding national and domestic security threats is imperative. Only in America could there be such a world-class group of speakers in an almost completely open forum discussing such crucial issues with thoughtful options and observations, AND taking direct questions from the audience. This week, I attended the Aspen Security Forum, an annual three-and-a-half-day conference in Aspen, CO. It’s where domestic and foreign government officials, business executives, leading academics, and journalists gather to discuss solutions to critical national security and foreign policy challenges.

Cooking with Bob: Risotto

Whether you’re coming home from work or on your way back from a horseback ride, this quick risotto recipe will hit the spot!Although I’m known for my steaks and overall meat-cooking abilities (like my hard-to-forget bolognese), this cooking demonstration features a simple risotto that is easy to recreate with a good pan and a few key ingredients.

Constructing Centene East Coast Headquarters

Centene Corporation, a leading multi-national healthcare enterprise, invested more than $1 billion to develop an 80-acre campus for 6,000 of its employees – and Clayco is helping to build it! Construction has been ongoing since 2020 and has been developed in multiple phases – the first being the main 770,000 square-foot, Class A office building and a 2,400-space parking garage. The development will feature office space, an early childhood development center, walking trails, water features, and more! The design also highlights the campus environment with open spaces, natural light, and the site’s natural features.

Two books to Read on Philanthropy in the Modern World

Two thought-provoking books I recently read on achieving a world that’s more equitable are The Business of Changing the World: How Billionaires, Tech Disrupters, and Social Entrepreneurs Are Transforming the Global Aid Industry by Raj Kumar and The Billionaire Who Wasn't: How Chuck Feeney Made and Gave Away a Fortune Without Anyone Knowing by Conor O’Clery. These books are helpful for anyone thinking about how to make a lasting impact. As Raj Kumar explains in The Business of Changing the World, the foreign aid industry, in the United States and elsewhere, is undergoing a vast transformation. Governments and aid agencies are no longer pouring large sums of money into international development projects. Instead, today’s demand is for evidence-based solutions that could more realistically put an end to extreme poverty, and that is very good news.

IREJ Lifetime Achievement Award

It was great to attend the Illinois Real Estate Journal (IREJ) Awards last night and see all of the incredible companies and people in our industry be recognized for their accomplishments. A big congratulations to Lamar Johnson Collaborative for winning the Office Interior Design award for their work with Horizon Therapeutics. The Grand Logan Lodge won in the Multifamily category and Mohawk Redevelopment earned its title in Industrial Redevelopment. USA Fire Protection won Building Service Company of the Year and Goettsch Partners was awarded Architecture Firm of the Year. There were also individuals acknowledged for their work on inclusion, such as Alba Colavitti from CRG who earned Volunteer of the Year, and Keiana Barrett from Sterling Bay who received the title of Champion of Diversity. These innovators do all that they can to build our communities back better!

Scurto Cement Construction Limited

Scurto Cement Construction ltd has been an incredible subcontractor for us at Clayco on a variety of our projects. Collaborating with us and laying the cement for Crossroads 55 and now Central Steel & Wire has proven why their company has been a leader in quality craftsmanship since 1973. Scurto has produced cutting-edge technology for over 45 years and pours over 500,000 square feet of concrete each day. The company’s President, David Scurto, primarily services states in the Midwest, like Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana along with a few more in the New England states. The organization partners with businesses to provide the value and services that they deserve. Scurto’s knowledge of concrete mix designs and innovative technologies ensures that they consistently provide high-quality services.

Discussing St. Louis on Donnybrook Next Up

It was great to join Donnybrook Next Up and discuss St. Louis and my thoughts on where the city is headed. I am innately an optimist, so I always work to keep a positive frame of mind – and there is a lot to be positive about in St. Louis. I talked with journalists and hosts Alvin Reid and Wendy Wiese about the political and cultural climate and how we see the region operating and evolving. It was great to also highlight how bringing the Expo to the United States will benefit the entire country.

July's Architecture Educator of the month: Geoffrey Taylor

Designing for the next generation is an important trend in architecture and design. A forward-thinking architectural educator that I admire is Geoffrey Taylor, Dean of the School of Building Arts at The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). A Harvard and SCAD graduate, he is a Doctor of Design and a major contributor to Savannah's innovative design sector. Geoffrey believes that the responsibility of architects is to make good buildings that meet human needs while also addressing the impact of construction on the environment.

The Southwest’s Fastest Growing Market

The Southwest region of the United States is seeing an increase in business and has established itself as an area of incredible potential for investment. To date, Clayco has over $1.2 billion in active construction projects awarded in the Phoenix market, which is approximately 11 million square feet of primarily industrial and multi-family residential projects.

Aspen Ideas Festival

It was interesting to attend the Aspen Ideas Festival in the beautiful Rocky Mountain State! There were so many incredible events and leaders gathered from around the world to discuss societal issues, advances, and how to best engage in change. The theme of the festival is Heat, Money, Trust, Connection, Power, and Beauty, and it explores global concepts that impact everyone.

PalmTower Transforms Phoenix Skyline

As the Southwest region in the United States becomes more of a hot spot for travel and residential ventures, Clayco is happy to continue adding to the skyline in Phoenix, AZ. With the integrated services of Clayco and Lamar Johnson Collaborative (LJC), the PalmTower is designed to be a distinctive addition to Phoenix – and stands at twenty-eight stories high while appearing to float above a sculptural, silver parking podium that features palm trees and desert landscaping next to the city sidewalks.

Juneteenth Fund

Juneteenth is an important time to reflect on the historic struggle so many people of color have undergone to secure freedom in America. I am honored to help underserved communities through Clayco’s Juneteenth Fund Advisory Committee – which donated six $25,000 grants to community-based nonprofit organizations at our second annual Juneteenth celebration. Our committee works to combat the systemic issues that have affected communities of color for far too long. The grants were donated to organizations that are committed to raising awareness and advancing the causes of Black equality and inclusion. Their mission is the same as ours, to empower individuals and companies alike to support progressive values.

Minnesota 2027 Expo bid Committee

I am honored to serve as co-chair of the Minnesota 2027 Expo bid committee. The bid committee and I were privileged to officially present our candidature to the BIE (Bureau International Exhibitions) today at the General Assembly in Paris. Bringing the “Healthy People, Healthy Planet” themed expo to America will provide tremendous opportunities for public diplomacy, business engagement, and political discourse that we need to achieve the world’s ambitious health and sustainability goals. I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with my many friends from Expo 2020 Dubai and making new acquaintances within the BIE while in Paris, including the Mayor of Busan Park Heong-joon, Director, International Expositions Unit at the State Department James Core, Prime Minister of South Korea Han Duck-soo, Chairman of SK Group Chey Tae-won, and the ministers at BIE in Paris.

My Experience

When I was appointed by the White House as United States Commissioner General of the USA Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, I was given an amazing opportunity to serve in a completely different way than what I am used to. I showcased the diversity, culture, and values of America while standing with friends from countries that love freedom from around the world. During my time at the Expo, I engaged and collaborated with a new family of team members. We worked diligently together as colleagues, explorers, and adventurers in a hopeful and diplomatic spirit.

Leaders

The Expo’s core message of “Connecting Minds and Creating the Future” could not have been more spot-on. I collaborated with groundbreaking innovators as we examined issues of sustainability, mobility, opportunity, and so much more. We engaged in a lively, spirited, and diplomatic way to examine hopeful solutions to our planet’s most pressing problems.

Pavilions

Expo 2020 Dubai changed how I see the world by gaining insight into each nation’s message and attributes. Some countries focused on politics, policies, technologies, and partnerships, while others were dedicated to tourism and investment opportunities. Even though each pavilion was represented by people from various backgrounds, we often found that we had more similarities than differences.

$100 Million Donation to Loyola University Chicago

In the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in 2020, corporate America promised to become more inclusive. Faced with public demands for social justice reforms, companies vowed to improve racial and ethnic diversity within their workforces, among their leadership ranks, and on their boards. While there has been some movement during the last two years, progress overall has been slower than expected. Corporate America is still trying to figure out how to reach equitable diversity levels and make their companies more reflective of the nation’s changing demographics.

170 N. Green Street - Fulton Market Acquisition

Clayco’s development arm, CRG, and Shapack Partners recently acquired the former Bridgford Foods site in Fulton Market. I am excited to see how this partnership will redevelop the property into one of Chicago’s most iconic projects – featuring 350,000 square feet of office, 250 apartment units, 150 hotel rooms, and 40,000 square feet of retail. Clayco, CRG, and Shapack Partners collaborated with stakeholders, Alderman Walter Burnett, and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development to make this vision a reality. Construction could begin as early as fall 2022.

Two Cautionary Tales About General Electric for Our Times

I have had tons of experiences working with Fortune 100 companies over the years. On capital projects ranging from $50 to $500 million, we are usually collaborating with the C-suite team members. Looking back over 35 years of doing business, I found that I could tell from these encounters, or should’ve been able to, whether a company was going to excel or deteriorate. Some of the great companies I worked with include Centene, Express Scripts, Microsoft, and Amazon. The planning, the energy, and the professionalism were evident throughout our exchanges and collaborations. A couple of companies I worked with that didn’t do so well were Venture and a large brewer, and you could see the handwriting on the wall.

How the World Really Works by Vaclav Smil

We know climate change is altering our planet. How the World Really Works is a much-needed reality check reminding us that before we can tackle problems effectively, we must understand the facts. This is a thought-provoking book I recently read that looks at the importance of energy for humanity. Written by Canadian energy expert Professor Vaclav Smil, the book explains the fundamental realities governing our survival and prosperity. These include fossil fuels and food production, globalization, and the future of the environment.

CRG Raises $450 Million for National Projects

CRG, Clayco’s development arm, officially raised $450 million as part of its U.S. Logistics Fund II. This will help build even more projects within the industrial sector. It’s exciting on many fronts, and I couldn’t be more proud of my son Shawn for leading this initiative and exceeding the initial goal.

May’s Artist of the Month: Lauren Halsey

Lauren Halsey is one of the most exciting young artists working today. She produces standalone artworks in sculpture and mixed media, and site-specific installations, particularly in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles where her family has lived for several generations. She has the vision of an activist, and her work explores the relationship between architecture and community engagement in urban centers. Her sculptural environments and flat works combine imagery from contemporary life in Harlem and LA with ancient Egypt, outer space, technicolor, and funk.

The Clark Family Branch St. Louis Library

The Clark family is humbled to be able to do something that will impact generations to come by donating $6 million to the new St. Louis County Library Headquarters. Libraries are the cornerstones of the community and are more relevant than ever post-pandemic. My family and I joined the St. Louis County Library Director & CEO Kristen Sorth, members of the Library Board, and the St. Louis County Library Foundation on May 24th as we announced the project. Together, we plan to evolve public libraries and invest in their limitless potential.

The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir

If it wasn’t so scary, the book The Room Where it Happened: A White House Memoir would be a good read as a novel about what leads the world into chaos and even the darkest of war scenarios. It’s an authentic memoir, not a novel. This is an intriguing book I recently read that offered exclusive insights into the workings of the White House. Written by former President Trump’s National Security Advisor John Bolton, his integral title related to U.S. safety gave him insider information and access to the Administration’s affairs. He spent many of his 453 days working right in the room where everything happened (and the facts speak for themselves). Die-hard fans of Bolton’s former boss quickly try to ignore or discredit him, as Fox News seems to forget that he was a daring foreign policy hawk for a long time before his tenure with the former president.

Clayco Named One of St. Louis’ Best Places to Work

Clayco just made the St. Louis Business Journal’s 2022 list of Best Places to Work in the giant company category, amongst other industry leaders such as CarShield, Cushman & Wakefield, and Stifel. This is an honor that we’re really proud of. Every year, the St. Louis Business Journal’s Best Places to Work program is designed to identify and highlight the companies that stand out for having the best workplace perks and the strategies they have adopted to attract and retain top talent. Clayco was acknowledged for offering a challenging, creative work environment where our team members trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people they work with. Our flexible working arrangements and employee benefits were also key factors.

Recent Feature: Crain’s Chicago Business

Since returning stateside, I had the opportunity to speak with Crain’s Chicago Business magazine about some incredible projects and experiences I’ve been a part of. Crain’s has always been one of my favorite business sources to read interesting analyses, commentary, and features. During our conversation, we spoke about what prompted me to make a call to the White House before the Expo, a scar I have that turned me from a child to an adult, and an exciting client Clayco is constructing rocket test facilities for. I also shared some of the key turning points that shaped my career path and how I operate in business today.

Topping Out The Standard at Columbia

I always love seeing the progress our teams are making on the ground, and I am excited that The Standard at Columbia in South Carolina is soon to be topped out! The 17-story, 443,000 square-foot housing tower downtown has taken a major step towards completion. The Standard will offer a mix of studio and one-to-five bedroom units and will be the only new high-rise in the market.

Willis Tower Transformation

One of the reasons I love Chicago so much is its magnificent architecture. There are few buildings as iconic as the revamped Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. When it was completed in 1974, it was the world’s tallest building – standing at 1,450 feet and 110 stories. Willis Tower remains the highest point against the beautiful Chicago skyline. The one problem with the spectacular modernist tower was its disconnectedness from the city. In 2015, EQ Office, a realty company owned by Blackstone, bought the property. The company hired Gensler, the largest architecture firm in the world, in collaboration with SKB Architects and OLIN, to inject new life into the tower and weave it into the urban fabric.

Healthy People, Healthy Planet – Minnesota Expo 2027

I am excited to work with my co-chair Marc Lore and the rest of the team for the Minnesota Expo 2027. The experience of leading the U.S. Delegation at Expo 2020 Dubai gave me great insight into the importance of these gatherings for American business interests and our global diplomatic relationships. I’m proud to join in and help reshape this campaign to host the first World’s Fair on American soil in nearly 40 years. The theme of the Expo is “Healthy People, Healthy Planet,” and will be the first to focus on bringing together health and wellness issues and innovations from as many as 170 countries.Well-being is more important now than ever before, and I’m happy to be part of the effort to bring this Specialized Expo to Minnesota. The goal is to generate engagement with governments, businesses, academia, and consumers to create impactful opportunities and solutions for our communities and the world.

Theaster Gates’ Arts Incubator Breaks Ground in Grand Crossing

Theaster Gates’ Arts Incubator broke ground in its largest project to date at the former St. Laurence Elementary School on May 3rd. This is the start of the process to convert it into an arts and creative incubator on Chicago’s South Side. I am extremely proud that the Clayco Foundation has committed $1 million to help develop this state-of-the-art 40,000-square-foot innovation hub for local artists and entrepreneurs.

Diving Into Contemporary Art at the CAM 2022 Gala

Clayco is always proud to partner with organizations that highlight quality contributions in their communities, which is why we sponsored the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) 2022 Gala in St. Louis this past weekend. I was excited to attend the event and celebrate the CAM’s dynamic range of exhibitions, public programs, educational initiatives, and collaborations including its current exhibitions by Martine Gutierrez, Alia Farid and Gala Porras-Kim.
